The new documentary, Boy George & Culture Club, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Thursday (June 5). The film delves into the iconic Eighties band’s rise and fall, including the doomed romance between singer Boy George and Culture Club drummer Jon Moss. The doc is directed by Alison Ellwood, who has worked on movies about the Eagles, the Go-Go’s, and Cyndi Lauper in recent years. The film explores the band’s lasting cultural impact as well as the intense love affair that inspired their enduring U.K. No. 1 hit, “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” and ultimately played a major role in the band’s dissolution. “I was most surprised by how forthcoming George, Jon, Mikey [Craig, bassist], and Roy [Hay, guitarist/keyboardist] were in telling their story,” Ellwood says. “Their powerful testimony takes us on a very personal and immersive journey, with each member experiencing the trials and tribulations of fame and success.” Boy George & Culture Club will premiere on Netflix sometime this fall.
